Hello,
I have customers ask me from time to time what goes into the handmade earrings process. I hope that this page will help to answer that question.
The first thing I do is design the earrings based on color trends, things I see in nature, shapes and so on. For example, this week I made some Swarovski earrings that are the sun color and in a flower shape. When the flowers are stacked on top of each other with sterling silver, it reminds me of some of the architecture found in Asia. A dear friend adopted a baby from China and I had taken some time to research China a little more and noticed how beautiful some of their buildings are. The Chinese pagoda is a traditional style of Chinese architecture and that is what I styled these earrings after. The photo I have included is of the Liuhe Pagoda (Six Harmonies Pagoda) of Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China, built in 1165 AD during the Song Dynasty. Handmade earrings (and handmade jewelry) can often tell a story and I find that to be a compelling reason to love this type of art.
I also made some Swarovski earrings this week where I used Siam red Swarovski crystals in modular shape. I stacked them so that they look to me like clusters of pomegranate seeds. I love to eat pomegranates and always feel a little bad about eating something so beautiful!
To be honest, I do not always start out with a plan for exactly what my handmade earrings are going to be. Sometimes I find beautiful beads and buy them simply for their beauty and then find ways to use them later. I enjoy going to large shows such as the Puget Sound Bead Festival in Washington to purchase beads from vendors that come from around the country.
